The betel leaf is cultivated in most of South and Southeast Asia. Since it is a creeper, it needs a compatible tree or a long pole for support. Betel requires high land and especially fertile soil.
In Sri Lanka also, betel is cultivated. It has a very good economic value since, it is exported.
The preparation of beds for betel cultivation is somewhat difficult and time consuming task.
First you must clear the land and must have some idea about the area. Betel bed is 4 feet wide and you can have any length, according to the agri department published books. But I use 3 feet width, for various practical reasons.
Betel is planted 1.5 feet apart from both sides. (in practical, but book says 1 feet). Normally from 100 pole one can get 1000 to 1500 leaves.
